ECE PhD student wins AMD/ATI Fellowship

Mr. Byunghyun Jang, a Computer Engineering PhD student, has been selected to receive a 2008-2009 ATI Fellowship Award. ATI/AMD established the ATI Fellowship program to support graduate work in the area of graphics processing. The Fellowship program is a worldwide competition and 4 Fellowships are awarded annually. Mr. Jang's project is titled "A Binary Translation Layer for ATI Stream Computing."


NORTHEASTERN AND THE UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND CHOSEN TO LEAD HOMELAND SECURITY CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the selection of 11 universities to serve as important partners for conducting multi-disciplinary research and creating innovative learning environments for critical homeland security missions. Northeastern is the first university in Massachusetts and one of only 11 universities nationwide to win a Centers of Excellence grant from the Department of Homeland Security. New IEEE Fellow: Professor Vincent Harris

Recognizing the achievements of its members is an important part of the mission of the IEEE. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for one of the Institute's most prestigious honors, elevation to IEEE Fellow. It is my great pleasure to inform you that the IEEE Board of Directors, at its meeting on 18 November 2007, elevated you to IEEE Fellow, effective 1 January 2008, with the following citation: For contributions to the science and engineering of microwave magnetic materials

During the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials conference last week, Anton Geiler won a best poster award for his M.Sc. thesis work on the PLD growth of epitaxial Ba-M type ferrite. There were approximately 4-5 awards chosen from about 500 posters. Congratulations Anton!

At this year's European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO), sponsored by EURASIP, the Athanasios Papoulis Award " for Outstanding Contributions to Education in the Signal Processing Discipline" was awarded to Professor John Proakis. This is a recently established award that was given for the first time. The Athanasios Papoulis Award is given to honour scientists whose work had a major impact in various aspects on Signal Processing education. Congratulations Professor Proakis !
