Given recent controversy surrounding Chartwells, NU Dining, and workers' rights, Northeastern University published a statement clarifying its position on this important matter for our community .
It is a core value at Northeastern University that everyone in our community be treated with respect and dignity. This is reflected in the university's Professional Standards and Business Conduct policy, which is publicly available. We expect all of our vendors to uphold this core value with their employees. We respect the right of Chartwells and its employees to engage in constructive dialogue regarding unionization, and we expect the two parties to resolve this matter independently.

SGA Feedback for the Curry Student Center

After the administration and SGA agreed not to proceed with Chick-fil-A as a vendor in the Student Center, both worked to determine other potential options .SGA created a survey which nearly 1500 students answered, and came to the conclusion that the undergraduate student body felt that Popeye's Chicken was the best option with which to move forward at this time.
The memo detailing the results and recommendations from SGA Vice President for Student Services Tim LePage to the administration is available here.
The administration has reached out to Popeye's and will update students when more information on progress becomes available.

Back Bay Fire Incident and Related Disruptions at Northeastern

Following the fires which began in the Back Bay region on Tuesday March 13th, several Northeastern University buildings experienced power outages and related safety issues. Due to said issues, Northeastern has made resources such as the Cabot Gymnasium available to students who have been evacuated temporarily from their residence halls. Stetson East dining hall is operating under extended hours (until midnight) to accomodate students who need food, both those with and without meal plans. Chick-fil-A and Student Feedback

On Monday, February 27th, SGA passed a Sense of the Senate that opposes the recent proposal to bring Chick-fil-A to Northeastern by a vote of 31-5.
The Northeastern University administration, Student Government Association and Graduate Student Government are in agreement that it is not in the best interest of the Northeastern community to pursue bringing Chick-fil-A to campus. It was unfortunate that we needed to come to a decision with such a short timeline, but with Curry Student Center renovations due to begin soon after Commencement, there was a need to move quickly to resolve this issue. The volume and passion of student feedback and input on this issue was integral to this decision. We look forward to working together to review other vendors.

RecycleMania Challenge Kicks Off at Northeastern

Every year, Northeastern University participates in RecycleMania, a nationwide initiative to encourage recycling on college campuses. SGA promotes this event in a variety of ways

Ever since you were a little kid you have probably been told to recycle. Your mom has yelled to throw the orange juice container in the recycling bin more times than you care to remember, but eventually it stuck and you became a life-long recycler. Or maybe you learned about the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle; from a catchy Jack Johnson song. No matter how you learned or became involved in recycling, everyone has been told at one point or another about its importance. Did you know that the average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood and other tree-made products? This amounts to roughly two billion trees! Or that recycling one aluminum can power a television for three hours? These are just some of the astounding benefits accrued by simply walking the extra few feet to the recycling bin. To do our part, Northeastern University is participating in the annual RecycleMania competition.
RecycleMania is a nationwide competition sponsored by a variety of major corporations and backed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency WasteWise Program. The initiative began in 2001 in Ohio as a competition between two state schools and has since grown to include schools from over 49 states and several Canadian locations. Last year, over 625 schools participated in the growing event and over 91 million pounds of recycled material were accounted for. Last year Northeastern recycled 19.25% of waste during the eight week event. This year we are looking to recycle more than ever before!
Nevertheless, it is impossible to do so without the help of everyone on campus! You have the ability to create a healthier environment AND win a coveted trophy just by kicking your recycling habits into high gear. The first step is taking action, so take your soda can with you when you don’t see a recycling bin instead of throwing it in the trash. Compost your food and napkins in the dining hall instead of sending them to be washed. There is so much you can do simply by making a conscious effort to locate recycling bins around campus and utilizing them. You are helping yourself and the environment by doing so. As of February 22nd Northeastern was ranked 185 out of 215 participating schools, we need your help to move up in the rankings and to make the environment a better place! The competition ends on March 31st, so be sure to keep recycling!
